When I worked on Corrers in the 1990s, Tony would regularly come into Granada's Coronation Street offices on Quay Street and though he hadn't written for the programme for many many years at that point, he was eternally interested in the show, utterly amiable and full of generosity of spirit. That was him as a guy. But as a writer and talent, let's never forget, that Tony created one of the most globally popular TV series of ALL time.
It started life as Florizel Street and was initially only commissioned for a handful of episodes because no-one at Granada thought it had much of a future! He created a show that ultimately discovered and/or developed the writing talents of everyone from Paul Abbott and Kay Mellor, to Sally Wainwright and Frank Cottrell Boyce. Add to that TV writing luminaries like Jack Rosenthal, Adele Rose, Harry Kershaw, Jim Allen,John Stevenson, Peter Whalley, Jan McVerry and many others, and it soon becomes clear that through the decades, Corrers has been the Northern Powerhouse of television writing.
Tony created this amazingly durable and enduring show. What an amazing legacy to leave.

It was with great sadness that I heard today of the death of NAWG Patron, Tony Warren MBE. He will be sadly missed and our love and sympathy goes to his family and loved ones. Born in Lancashire in 1936, he was best known for episodes he wrote for the ITV soap, Coronation Street, until the late 1970s.
