Report on Technology for the Committee Meeting on 30th October 2025 by Kevin Machin
A number of projects and initiatives are starting to take shape. Thanks to all staff for their invaluable feedback. I've tried to incorporate as much of it as I can.
Achievements
- A cloud compute service has been selected and set up, though this has not yet been fully configured nor secured.
- A new website has been deployed there. For now it remains in a preview & development phase and is not for public consumption.
- A technology roadmap has been started, with three main projects identified, along with their initial phases. No timescales as yet.
Next Steps
- Work on the new website, focusing on the tasks that will get us to the point where the old one can be replaced.
- Continue to migrate material from the even older website (which I exhumed from a backup) onto the new one. Much of this may end up not being used in the long run, but it's a useful source of ideas.
- Research potential new shop solutions. This is a longer term objective.
Strategy
The rough strategy for improving our use of technology can be summarised as follows.
- Evolutionary.
- Iterative.
- Incremental.
Trying to do everything at once would almost certainly result in disaster.
