Issue 527566 – Website: improve ranking in search engine results Show all…

Type: Enhancement
State: Triaged
Severity: Minor
Priority: Low
Found release: 2.x
Description:

As of 21-Jun-2017, the position of our website in search engine results is poor.

This task is about addressing this issue by means of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Actions to Take

  1. Carry out research to find out what may be causing our poor results.
  2. Further actions to be determined, based on research.

Bigger Project

As SEO is a complex and on-going task, there is a project on the wiki that has much more information.

Resolution:

[09-Aug-2017] Created a Google account for NAWG and connected our website to Google Search Console, in order to start analysing our searches.

[18-Oct-2017] Website release 2.8.0. Added front page meta description text. XML sitemap submitted to Google.

[14-Nov-2017] Edited the excerpt, and therefore the meta-description, for the NAWGFest main page. The description now contains more potential search term keywords.

[15-Dec-2017] Work suspended.

[16-Feb-2018] Work resumed. Front page meta-description text was expanded.

[11-May-2018] Moved information onto the documentation/collaboration wiki. Reduced the priority of this issue.

[08-Jun-2018] Reduced front page meta-description to 146 characters, as Google are now making these descriptions shorter on their SERPs.

[20-Jul-2018] Work suspended, since the 2.x website is to be decommissioned.
