Issue 745936 – Website: "contact us" form fails on submission Show all…

Type: Problem
State: Under test
Severity: Major
Priority: High
Found release: P.17.2
Description:

Submitting messages using the "contact us" form fails when the form is submitted.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to the contact us form.
  2. Enter your message and other required details.
  3. Click the "submit" button.

Expected Behaviour

The form to be submitted and a success message displayed. Email messages should be sent to NAWG staff and to the email address given on the form.

Actual Behaviour

The email messages seem to get sent, but then an error message appears, such as in the example below.

National Association of Writers & Groups
Error

The requested resource could not be found.

Return to the home page.

Impact

The user cannot continue with the site, other than to reload at the home page.

Although ad-hoc experimenting suggests the messages are sent, the user (and staff) are likely to have a very low confidence that the messages are getting through.

Other Observations

  • The membership application form has similar issues.
  • The issue is not 100% reproducible. It depends on the input data. For example, inputting an email address such as seems to trigger the problem.
Resolution:

[16-Oct-2026 Kevin] A "bad" email address may cause an SMTPRecipientsRefused exception to be raised. This is not being handled (in the found release), so results in the abrupt termination of the POST request.

Note that:

  • The sender, perhaps obviously given the above, does not get a confirmation message;
  • The NAWG staff do get their messages, since they are sent prior to that.

The sending order should probably be reversed as part of the fix, so at least the NAWG staff don't get messages from "bad" senders.
